Founded in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers, National Engineers' Week is held annually in February during the week of George Washington's birthday, who was not only the first President of the United States, but who has also been described as the first American engineer and surveyor. National Engineers' Week aims to improve public understanding and appreciation of the engineering profession and technology. The primary objective of Engineers Week is to raise public awareness of engineers' positive contributions to our quality of life. By promoting a technical education in mathematics and science, Engineers Week also encourages students to pursue a career in engineering. Today, Engineers Week is sponsored by a formal coalition of more than 70 engineering, education, and cultural societies; and more than 50 corporations and government agencies. Engineers Week reaches thousands of schools, businesses, and community groups across the United States. The Hawaii Council of Engineering Societies (HCES) organizes Engineers Week activities in Hawaii annually and the following is a recap of these activities:
